Trained as a mechanical engineer, Rupert joined the Program in Applied and Computational Mathematics of Princeton University in 1988 as a PostDoc (hosted by Andrew J. Majda), returned to Germany in 1990 to complete his Habilitation in "nonstationary mechanics" in 1995 and accepted a professorship in Technological Safety at Wuppertal University the same year. In 1997 he became professor of mathematics at Freie Universität Berlin (FUB) and, delegated to the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, headed their Data & Computation Department until 2007. Since then he has been a full professor of mathematics at FUB. His main research concerns theoretical and computational fluid dynamics with an emphasis on atmospheric flows and combustion.
